LIGHT OF HOPE has the obligation to help. Perhaps
we are the hope that they have always desired to have
at some time. We are Reconstructing Lives.”

MERARDO’S TESTIMONY
TESTIMONY: MY STORY
My name is Merardo Pillpa Alvarado and I was born on
July 11, 1991. I am from San Juan de Jarpa –
Chupaca, Perú. This town is very small and very cold. I
was born normal with fingernails and toenails. Within
one week I started to have little boils and my nails
started to break little by little. At one month old I had
blisters all over my body and it has been like this year
after year. My body became covered with sores.
When I was seven years old my parents took me to a
homeopathic doctor who wanted 1,500 soles [nearly
two month's earnings at minimum wage] for him to cure
me. At eight years of age, my father took me to the
hospital but they could not do anything for me. All of
this is a nightmare for me because the open blisters
that I have get stuck to my clothes.
I remember that as a young child I would scream and
cry when my mom took off my clothes to bathe me and
change me. She did it quickly because she needed to
go and take care of the animals. We were sheep
farmers in the arid area where I was born.
At the age of twelve my parents moved here to Ahuac.
I am in high school now. My friends were afraid of me
because they thought that my illness was contagious.
But it’s not. It only happened to me. At night I cannot
sleep because my clothes stick to both the large and
small sores on my body. So I take off my clothes and I
put pieces of notebook paper on the sores that are full
of pus so that they will stick to the paper. This is quite
painful.
Now I am fifteen. The doctors I saw when I was thirteen
gave me the diagnosis of: recessive and matting
congenital blistering dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa.
In February 2005 I went to Lima, thanks to the help of
some people who gave a monetary gift to my father
because we don’t have any money. They (Lima
doctors) gave me a certain treatment and I returned
with my father. The blisters still appear on my skin, like
on my arm, neck and the tough and thick skin. I get
scabs, such that I lose blood every day. I weigh 35
kilos [~78 lbs]. I get sores on my palms, feet and
knees, and also on my stomach, my hands are closed
up [webbed] because my fingers are stuck to my hand.
When I was little I fell down a lot and every time I fell to
the floor I got blood blisters on my palms. This used to
cause me a lot of pain so I became accustomed to
clenching my hands and in this way the sores healed.
Now I cannot open my hands and spread my fingers,
because of this I can’t hold a cup or a bottle. It’s
difficult for me.
I would like to go to college, I like to learn and study. I
have a few diplomas and I am now in my fourth year
[this corresponds to a high school junior]. Perhaps I will
study. I don’t know.
What will become of my life? Will I have work?
Well, I wish to be a professional like Alan.
I have been praying for a year and only God knows
what it is that I have!

MERARDO’S CASE
We have known Merardo for over a month. He always
comes to study with us. He wants to learn English,
math and other subjects because he wants to be a
professional.
Merardo has a strange illness. We see him every day
in the mornings in our school in the town of Ahuac.
Merardo appears very thin and we know that his
parents are quite poor. They work for other people.
They live in a home that is not theirs but is the house of
other people. It’s a very old house and is at the point of
collapse. The whole family sleeps together. There are
eight people altogether and they all sleep on the floor
because they don’t have beds nor mattresses.
Merardo has five siblings whose names are: Miriam,
Alejandra, Henry, Jaime and a small baby whose name I
don’t remember. Merardo is the oldest of all of them.
His father always comes home at 6:00 p.m. Every day
he is very tired. His mother works as a maid in a home
and she also returns very late. The children are alone
most of the time, even so their mom always goes home
to visit them anytime during the day. She brings them
something small to eat or meals for her children.
Merardo is the only person ill in the family. His illness is
not contagious. He is a good student and a magnificent
person. We admire Merardo for his strength and his
desire to continue living, even though his parents have
already lost hope.

OBJETIVO:
“Se dice que el ser humano tiene muchos derechos; el
más importante es el derecho a la vida, en el mundo
hay muchas personas que se aferran a la vida, día a
día luchan por seguir viviendo y sonriendo aunque esto
cueste hacer. Son seres humanos que no tuvieron la
oportunidad de triunfar y es a ellos que PERU LUZ DE

TESTIMONIO:«HISTORIA MÍA»
Mi nombre es Merardo Pillpa Alvarado y nací el 11 de
Julio del año 1991, soy de San Juan de Jarpa-
Chupaca, Perú, este pueblo es muy pequeño y muy frío
, yo nací normal, con uñas en los dedos de mis manos
y de mis pies, dentro de una semana me salieron
bolitas y mis uñas se rompían poco a poco, a los 1 mes
de nacido yo tenía ampollas en todo el cuerpo y esto
paso años tras años. Mi cuerpo se llenó de muchas
heridas.
Cuando llegue a tener 7 años mis padres me llevaron a
un doctor naturista quien pidió S./ 1500 para que el me
pueda curar, a los 8 años mi padre me llevó al hospital
pero nada se pudo hacer para mí, todo esto es una
pesadilla porque las heridas que tengo en mi cuerpo se
pegan en mis ropas.
Yo recuerdo que de niño gritaba y lloraba cuando mi
mamá me sacaba la ropa para bañarme y cambiarme la
ropa ella lo hacia rápido porque tenia que ir a cuidar el
animal, yo fui un pastor de ovejas en la puna donde yo
nací.
A los 12 años mis padres me han vivido a vivir aquí en
Ahuac, ahora estoy en el colegio, mis amigos temían de
mí porque pensaban que mi enfermedad era
contagiosa, pero no fue así, esto solo me pasó a mí, yo
no puedo dormir en las noches porque mi ropa se
pegan a las heridas grandes y pequeñas de mi cuerpo,
entonces yo lo saco y lo pongo papel de cuaderno
para que se peque en la herida donde esta lleno de
puses y me duelen mucho.
Ahora tengo 15 años, los doctores a los 13 años me
diagnosticaron como: hepedermolises, bolosa,
ampollar, congenita distrolica, recesiva y empética.
En Febrero del 2005 fui a Lima gracias a la ayuda de
algunas personas que regalaron dinero a mi papa
porque no tenemos dinero y no me daban un
tratamiento determinado y luego volví con mi papá,
siempre me aparecen unas ampollas en mi piel como
en el brazo, cuello y en las pieles duras y gruesas me
salen como una sangre muerta o sea sangre que yo
elimino cada día, pues peso 35 Kg. Me salen heridas
en la palma de la mano, pies y rodillas, también en mi
estomago, pues mi mano está empuñada porque mis
dedos están pegados a mi mano, cuando yo era
pequeño yo me caía a cada momento y cada vez que
yo me caía al suelo me salían unos bolones de sangre
que se hinchaban en la palma de mi mano, esto me
causaba mucho dolor y por eso me acostumbré a
empuñar los dedos de mi mano y luego sanaron las
heridas y yo no puedo abrir mis dedos hacia fuera por
esta razón no puedo coger un vaso o botella y esto es
difícil para mí.
A mí me gusta ir al colegio, me gusta aprender y
estudiar, tengo varios diplomas y ahora paso a 4to.
año, quizás estudiaré. No lo se.

CASO MERARDO
Conocimos a Merardo hace mas de un mes, el asiste a
estudiar siempre con nosotros, el quiere aprender
inglés, matemáticas y otros cursos porque su único
deseo es ser un profesional.
Merardo tiene una extraña enfermedad, lo vemos todos
los días por las mañanas en nuestra escuela del
pueblo de Ahuac. Merardo se ve muy delgado
sabemos que sus padres son muy pobres, ellos
trabajan para otras personas, la familia de Merardo
vive en una casa que no es de el es de otras personas,
es una casa muy antigua que esta a punto de colapsar
toda su familia duermen juntos son 8 personas en total
y duermen en el piso porque no tienen camas ni
colchones, Merardo tiene 5 hermanos sus nombres
son: Miriam, Alejandra, Henry, Jaime y una bebé que es
muy pequeña y no recuerdo su nombre, Merardo es el
hermano mayor de todos ellos.
El padre siempre vuelve a las 6:00p.m. Todos los días
muy cansado, y la madre trabaja de criada en una casa
y también vuelve muy noche, los niños se quedan solos
la mayor parte del tiempo, aunque la madre siempre va
a visitarlos a cualquier hora del día, les lleva algunos
alimentos o alguna comida para sus hijos.
Merardo es el único enfermo en su familia, su
enfermedad no es contagiosa, es un buen estudiante,
es una magnífica persona, nosotros admiramos a
Merardo por su fortaleza y sus deseos de seguir
viviendo, aunque sus padres ya perdieron las
esperanzas.

TESTIMONIO:«HISTORIA MÍA»
Mi nombre es Merardo Pillpa Alvarado y nací el 11 de

, yo nací normal, con uñas en los dedos de mis manos

de nacido yo tenía ampollas en todo el cuerpo y esto
paso años tras años. Mi cuerpo se llenó de muchas
heridas.
Cuando llegue a tener 7 años mis padres me llevaron a
un doctor naturista quien pidió S./ 1500 para que el me
pueda curar, a los 8 años mi padre me llevó al hospital
pero nada se pudo hacer para mí, todo esto es una
pesadilla porque las heridas que tengo en mi cuerpo se
pegan en mis ropas.
Yo recuerdo que de niño gritaba y lloraba cuando mi

ropa ella lo hacia rápido porque tenia que ir a cuidar el
animal, yo fui un pastor de ovejas en la puna donde yo
nací.
A los 12 años mis padres me han vivido a vivir aquí en
Ahuac, ahora estoy en el colegio, mis amigos temían de
mí porque pensaban que mi enfermedad era
contagiosa, pero no fue así, esto solo me pasó a mí, yo
no puedo dormir en las noches porque mi ropa se
pegan a las heridas grandes y pequeñas de mi cuerpo,
entonces yo lo saco y lo pongo papel de cuaderno
para que se peque en la herida donde esta lleno de
puses y me duelen mucho.
Ahora tengo 15 años, los doctores a los 13 años me
diagnosticaron como: hepedermolises, bolosa,
ampollar, congenita distrolica, recesiva y empética.
En Febrero del 2005 fui a Lima gracias a la ayuda de
algunas personas que regalaron dinero a mi papa
porque no tenemos dinero y no me daban un
tratamiento determinado y luego volví con mi papá,
siempre me aparecen unas ampollas en mi piel como
en el brazo, cuello y en las pieles duras y gruesas me
salen como una sangre muerta o sea sangre que yo
elimino cada día, pues peso 35 Kg. Me salen heridas
en la palma de la mano, pies y rodillas, también en mi
estomago, pues mi mano está empuñada porque mis
dedos están pegados a mi mano, cuando yo era
pequeño yo me caía a cada momento y cada vez que
yo me caía al suelo me salían unos bolones de sangre
que se hinchaban en la palma de mi mano, esto me
causaba mucho dolor y por eso me acostumbré a
empuñar los dedos de mi mano y luego sanaron las
heridas y yo no puedo abrir mis dedos hacia fuera por
esta razón no puedo coger un vaso o botella y esto es
difícil para mí.
A mí me gusta ir al colegio, me gusta aprender y
estudiar, tengo varios diplomas y ahora paso a 4to.
año, quizás estudiaré. No lo se.

CASO MERARDO
